Equipment

My general rule is get all the help I can through best possible equipment. Fast autofocus, accurate exposure, great frame rate, crispy and bright lenses, a fast flash and speedy memory card and of course the toughest underwater housings that can be found. Nikon’s cameras have a proven record with me and I take them to the most hostile environments. Deep down in the ocean surrounded by cold and salty water where my Sea&Sea housing keeps all the electronics happy and dry on every dive.

And those backpacking days are over for me since many decades! As a professional underwater photographer the amount of equipment I bring with me on a mission is ridiculous. But I know for sure that “what you bring is what you have” and things do break, fall over board or flood so redundancy is there in every detail of my planning. As the packing lists get longer and longer the mind battle starts and in the end I have to leave some stuff behind.

So I really try to bring it all and always fail. As a standard I bring between ten and fourteen lenses, minimum two camera bodies, one or two uw-housings, several flat and dome ports, extention rings, arm systems, cables, minimum three UW-strobes, topside strobe, tripods for topside & UW, teleconverters, action video cameras, UW lights and much much more and then topping up with computer, harddrives and other topside hardware plus full diving gear. For me it is mandatory to take off best possibly prepared, with back ups and be ready for good and bad surprises. It takes serious equipment to achieve that.
